Bonito Brazil: getting out of the big smoke

I want to talk about how great Bonito is. Bonito is a town of about 17,000 but feels like 4,000. Everybody knows everybody and word spreads quickly, one of those towns. For example, Willian and I walked around town yesterday and I sipped a cup of Matte, which the locals here devour. The next day at work Willian had three people ask him about the guy drinking Matte that was with him. Got to love small towns.

⛪ It’s one of the those old timey quaint town where old men leave newspapers on the public benches so that the next person can have something to read. Men carry woven baskets of pastries up and down the main thoroughfare selling them to women sitting in the shade.

🎎 Young girls hold their grandmothers arms as they walk down the sidewalk and those same girls dress up in the evenings and walk around the main plaza and show off for the young men who are usually putting on a show for them too by playing soccer or practicing capoeira. 🐔 Chickens run around on the streets and families use the bicycle as means of transportation.

⚽ On the backstreets in the evenings, gangs of kids can be found playing either soccer in the streets or a game of cricket, using 1 liter Coke bottles as the wicket and 1X3s with carved, worn handles as bats. 🐔 Macaws and parrots fly overhead as people of all ages sit in groups and chat while continuously refilling a cup of Matte that is sipped with a thick metal straw that they’ve probably had for years.

🌱 Tereré: matte is prepared by dumping a few handfuls of crushed up tea leaves, mint and other dried leaves into a cup. Water is then poured over the heap of crushed leaves and organic material until the cup fills. The straw has a spoon shaped filter at the bottom; this is to keep out sediment from the crushed tea leaves. The first 4 or 5 cupfuls of water don’t taste so great and are usually spat out because it’s so full of sediment. But once the tea leaves create a natural filter around the straw, one begins to enjoy it. So old men sit around with coolers of ice water and refill this cup all day while they chat with their friends. Some of the cups and straws are a bit ornate; they really take pride in the way that they drink matte around here.
